A European peacock butterfly rests briefly in the returning warmth of early spring, its wings open to the light.

After the quiet of winter, the first butterflies feel almost improbable. The Peacock butterfly is often among the earliest to appear, emerging from its winter shelter when the sun begins to carry warmth again.

Capturing this moment felt like holding on to the very first breath of spring.
