Winchester Mist
My daughter went to University in Winchester and I must admit that I really loved that city. To get to her digs I would exit the M3 and pass cars parked along the road and pass a country path that clearly led off into the Hampshire countryside. I promised myself that I would make the effort at some time to arrive a few hours before my presence was required and explore.
As I lived a good couple of hours away it was easier to go in the winter when the sun rose a little later in the day. Typically, the day I chose, it was freezing and a little foggy. When I arrived, there were clearly a few more spaces in the car park than usual.
Wandering around the countryside in a harness with two cameras hanging off it can frequently attract a bit of attention. A wonderful couple spoke to me asking about the cameras and my photography, they gave me great advice of where to go to get some great views. It was while I was talking to them that I saw the figure disappear into the mist between the trees. Too good an opportunity to miss.
The route advised was along Hockley Railway Viaduct and the Itchen River. I followed the path they suggested, very pleased that I had my walking boots on as the paths were very muddy. As it was a little quieter, I was privileged to spot a great deal of wildlife.
The mist is gently clearing leaving a stunning brilliant blue cloudless sky. I spotted a (I think) snowy egret in the stream totally oblivious to me and happily fishing. Further along the path a (I think) little egret in a tree.
A small group of trees near a church created another interesting vista and the low sun peeks through at just the right angle, the little mist that remains in the air means that the light was softened into this stunning star burst. This is where I saw the treecreeper hanging from the bark of a nearby tree, beautifully camouflaged, I would not have spotted it had it not hopped.
Further along the river were swans with last year’s cygnets and moorhens. There’s a café where I stop and get a coffee and just enjoy the view before heading off again. It was a lovely walk, peaceful and relaxing. Fabulous views and striking reflections and one that I did several times after that day. My daughter has since graduated and is no longer at Winchester. I would have to say that I miss the city and that walk, although it was never as special as it was on that day.
